PB&J Discussion

1) This video highlights the challenge of adding specificity to a piece of writing. Skipping out on words and giving generalized descriptions when writing is something we may do naturally since we’re used to speaking casually in our own language. When speaking casually, we don’t take the time to state each individual action. This is done for efficiency and because others also that are also fluent are able to fill in the gaps and understand what one means. Our brains automatically use context clues and find filler words when listening, so specificity is not needed. However, if following instructions on a topic that you have no knowledge of, specificity is required.

2) This video relates to our Technical Description assignment because we will be writing about the inner workings of an item which may require specific terminology. The engineer of that item may be very familiar with it but someone else may not. Someone who is not an expert in that field would know nothing about the inner workings, connections, and significant pieces of the item. Engineers need to record their work and their writing is seen by many people in the process. It is important that specificity is used so the reader can thoroughly understand what is happening.

3) This video changed the way I view technical communication because I now realize the importance of being specific and precise with wording for an engineer. Engineers have to write as part of the process of creating something. Using every bit of information possible is important so that readers can fully understand the point being made. It ensures that no mistakes are made in future processes. Others may refer to the writing for further future developments which means it is important that the writer is specific with terminology and instruction.
