Squirrel Proof Birdfeeder
1) The problem identified in the video is that squirrels have broken into any squirrel-proof bird feeder the man had put up. He had tried 4 different bird feeders which had all been broken into. For this reason, the man decided to test the squirrel’s limitations by setting up an obstacle course that the birds could easily land on, but the squirrels would have to work for. However, after testing his experiment, the man realized that the squirrels were far more capable at getting across than the man anticipated. After a couple of days of retrying the squirrels were able to get past this obstacle course and release the walnuts.
2) If I wanted to make sure the squirrels did not get in I would instead make one mechanism that the squirrels could not take the top off of or get into. However, I believe the man’s intention was not to keep the squirrels out but to see how far they would go for food and how capable they are. This is a better idea in my opinion as he was able to observe things about squirrels we wouldn’t have seen otherwise. For example, when they are launched they use physics to land in a certain position.
3) This video relates to our Engineering Project bc the man has technically engineered a course as a project. We can see the steps the man took and compare our project to his. For example, first he observed the squirrels actions. Then he brain stormed a course. He then created the course and explained how it would work. Next he recorded his results and any additional observations
